It has been a busy time, but… when was I not busy. Don’t remember.
We did our trip to Iceland, and what I can say is wow wow wow! It was really stunning. We had quite a bit of rain but we enjoyed our trip very much and our guide Gunnar had a lot to do with it. Great! I had read How Iceland changed the world : the big history of a small island, by Egill Bjarnason. I found it really interesting and well written with quite a wit and lots of information. Still it really stays on the surface and I think Iceland is much more complex that this book leads to think.
Just posted on The Last Lifeboat by Hazel Gaynor. What a treat this novel was. Also, how current, unfortunately. The author concludes her historical notes with a quote from Eglantyne Jenn, founder of Save the Children: “Every war is a war against children”. The world is on fire and many people suffer, and many children are not safeguarded by the adults as they should be. I read quite a bit about the Second World War. I got started with a novel and then it was another one and another one. The joys of customer activity tracking… I learn every time something new about the resilience we have as human beings. But I also see all the pain and violence repeat itself time and time again, and the intolerance and rejection of others. I see it also through the volunteering work I do for Translators without Borders. We have a long way to go.
I have a mountain of books on my list and quite a few advance readers copies for novels coming out in the summer. I think I will look for something a little lighter for now.
And a cooking book is always a great discovery. I am now going to open Eating with the Tudors by Brigitte Webster. Whilst it is now the season for barbecues, salads and fresh fruit, I am sure the Tudors will be an interesting time to discover. The book will be out on 30 July, so watch this space!
Will be back soon …. Going back to my books …
