I read this book after listening to an interview of Johann Hari on TV. I could certainly relate to this situation he was describing about being unable to focus, hooked to the phone, and jumping from one thing to another.
I learned a lot in that book and the author has for sure covered a lot of topic. He really looks into everything in our current society that is undermining our ability to focus. And there are so many of these forces at work. Social media, artificial intelligence driving our appliances, education, pollution etc. There is a lot of research behind everything in the book and the author has met many scientists and researchers. Many ideas he brings forward will give you, as an individual, food for thought about what you can do to help yourself.
But the main conclusion is that this is a societal issue that needs to be addressed just like climate change. It goes well beyond the individual. It needs a solution but we can’t do it alone. For those people who are into advocacy, activism and politics, it is opening very interesting avenues. And maybe this is what we all have to become, because the alternative is not so great. An interesting read that will definitely make you think!
